About Us
Listen to Our Story!

Houtzel Cattle Co. LLC may be a new name to the Black Hereford breed, but we are by no means new to the cattle industry. We bought our first registered Angus heifer in 1995. Our bulls were marketed through the South Montana Angus Association bull sale. We sold our bulls through SMAA until 2013. Then we started to sell our bulls and coming two year olds by private treaty.
Our bulls were marketed by private treaty until 2017, then we had the opportunity to sell our ranch in Cardwell. We moved to our current Ranch near Chinook to be closer to our kids and grandchildren. Our daughter Jill, her husband Kelly and their family live near Gwynn Alberta. Our son Ryan and his wife Royce and their children live south of Chinook in the Bear Paw Mountains. Royce owns and operates Milk River Genetic Embryo transfer service. About this time I learned about the Black Hereford breed. I was running about 100 registered Angus cows and bred them to a really good Hereford bull. We picked ten of what we considered the very best F1 heifers and start out own Black Hereford herd.
Our son, Ryan runs our cows with their commercial herd in the Bear Paw Mountains. I feel this environment is the best method for making culling decisions. We AI heifers and cows to only the top Hereford bulls and purchase top performance bulls with EPD’s we want. We are starting to see the results of our embryo transfer work and it is outstanding!
We are a 100% total outcross herd and by utilizing our genetics will definitely be beneficial to our customers!
